  47. Last week his 40 meter antenna fell victim to the famous Calvert County
  48. (MD) ice storm. The next day he lost power for 6 straight days. Now he's
  49. going into the hospital for hip surgery, followed by 6 weeks of recovery
  50. with nothing to do but watch ice melt. Not a good month for Ron Nord,
  51. N3AKP, who, by the way, is no spring chicken. 
  52.  
  53. I wouldn't post this request if I didn't think it would make a 
  54. difference. But it would really be great if you could cut loose an extra 
  55. QSL card and send it along to Ron with perhaps a little "get-well" 
  56. message. It's the kind of thing that would brighten his spirits and maybe 
  57. even speed his recovery a bit.

  149. For those of you who have been following my adventures with Yeasu trying to
  150. resolve what seems to be internally generated RF noise around 145.14 Mhz,
  151. here's the latest:
  152.  
  153. They have now had the radio (second time back) for about 2.5 weeks. Last
  154. Thursday, the phone rep told me that the unit was waiting for a Quality Control
  155. check before being shipped (I didn't ask where Quality Control was when they
  156. didn't fix the problem the first time around). It's now almost a week later,
  157. and still no radio, so I called to find out what was going on.
  158.  
  159. After being told they would call back in 15-20 minutes, and waiting 45 minutes
  160. with no response, I called again, and finally got through to 'Sam' (didn't get
  161. the last name), who is the Service Manager. He said he could not find any sign
  162. of the interference. No matter what they had tried, nothing other than 'normal
  163. FM noise' was audible in the frequency range in question, and no other receivers
  164. held near the 530 picked anything up. This conversation went on for about
  165. 15 minutes, at which point I was connected with Chip Margelli, the Customer
  166. Service Manager who I had talked with several times before.
  167.  
  168. Chip reiterated Sam's statement that they could find nothing no matter what
  169. they tried. He repeatedly attempted to find the noise while we talked, but
  170. couldn't do it. Naturally, if they can't reproduce the problem, they can't
  171. fix it.
  172.  
  173. At this point, I just want the thing back, so I said to ship it back, and I
  174. would try it out again. If the problem still exists, I'll try to work with
  175. them to pin it down. I thought I had pretty much proven it was coming from
  176. the 530, but I'll see if there is some undiscovered external force at work
  177. here.
  178.  
  179. I should have the unit by Friday. Maybe the problem has magically disappeared
  180. due to the therapeutic effects of UPS shipping. I'll keep you all posted.

  300. Do you operate CW?  The reason that the thumb on the right hand is the dot
  301. lever is probably historical.  Old time "bugs" used a weight on a spring
  302. loaded lever arm to send dots, and the thumb controlled that lever.  On
  303. the other hand (so to speak) a good friend of mine sends with his right
  304. hand, but he learned to send using a paddle configured for a left handed
  305. operator - as a result, his right hand thumb sends space elements.  I
  306. have another contest operator friend who did, in fact, teach himself to
  307. send with his left hand so that he would write with his right in contests.
  308. That was years before CT and other computer logging programs made keyer
  309. paddles all but obsolete in contests...

  352. the owner in the back, it may be that the customer is not always right. This
  353. thing between Jeff and John is obviously personal. As such, it has no 
  354. place here. Notice how carefully Jeff avoided telling us what product 
  355. he was talking about. A new reader could infer that he was talking about 
  356. a presently available product, which he was not. My only purpose here was 
  357. to point out that he was talking about the FTR-146, not the present FX-146, 
  358. and since he has not purchased anything from Ramsey in two years, is not 
  359. a present authority on their products.

  469. Most QSL managers do it for the love of the hobby.  You really have to
  470. hand it to them -- it's an awful lot of time and effort that could
  471. be spent working your own DX.

  473. F6FNU charges $2 per card which is twice the normal one "green stamp"
  474. contribution.  If you send $1 he replies via the bureau, which is
  475. essentially free.  Apparently he makes around $1 per QSL.

  486.     Since there was a lot of interest in this a few months back, I thought 
  487. I'd post this for the rest of the net.  This was the lead article in Tom Blair's 
  488. column in the February 17, 1994 edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

  490.     "In a new bit of tension between the Board of Supervisors and Sheriff 
  491. Jim Roache, the board refused Tuesday to accept a gift to the Sheriff's Dept. 
  492. and told the sheriff to return it.  the gift:  a portable ham radio used last 
  493. August by a back-country bicyclist, Chris Boyer, to summon help for a 
  494. seriously injured friend.  After sheriff's deputies responded to the 
  495. emergency call, they told Boyer he had violated FCC rules by using restricted 
  496. emergency frequencies and ordered him to surrender the improperly altered 
  497. radio to them and the FCC.  To avoid further hassle, Boyer signed the radio 
  498. over to the department as a gift.  But the supervisors, who honored Boyer in 
  499. December as a good Samaritan, said no thanks this week.  They urged the 
  500. sheriff to return the radio to Boyer."

  541. A preliminary plan from the National Telecommunications and
  542. Information Administration (NTIA) for reallocating government
  543. frequencies to non-government uses does not go far enough in
  544. responding to the will of Congress in protecting the needs of
  545. amateurs, the ARRL says.

  547. Specifically affected would be the 2300 to 2450 MHz band.  The
  548. preliminary plan would transfer some of that band to new
  549. non-government uses, which would not necessarily result in the loss
  550. of frequencies for amateurs, but amateur sharing could be more
  551. difficult than it now is with government users.

  553. NTIA proposes to leave 2400 to 2402 and 2417 to 2450 MHz as now
  554. allocated, in part to permit continued amateur and, especially,
  555. amateur satellite operation.  2390 to 2400 and 2402 to 2417 MHz
  556. would be made available for new non-government services as early as
  557. August 1994, and 2300 to 2310 MHz would be made available later,
  558. under the NTIA plan.

  560. In 1990 the ARRL commented to the NTIA when a study of domestic
  561. telecommunications infrastructure was begun.  At that time, the
  562. League said that Amateur Radio's role of education and public
  563. service depended on it not being taken for granted in its modest
  564. spectrum needs.

  566. In late 1992 the NTIA issued a notice of inquiry asking spectrum
  567. users what their future needs would be, and the League responded
  568. with a list, including ''continued or upgraded access to 2300 MHz for
  569. both terrestrial and satellite uses.''
  570.  
  571. The plan is the proposed implementation of a reallocation of
  572. spectrum from government to non-government use mandated by Congress
  573. last year.

  575. A public comment period on the plan runs until May 1994.

  610. In reply comments to the FCC on a proposal for instant operating
  611. authority for new amateur operators, PR Docket 93-267, the ARRL said
  612. that, ''almost without exception,'' groups and individuals who had
  613. responded to the proposal agreed with the League that the idea
  614. should be shelved in favor of electronic filing of license
  615. applications with the FCC.

  617. The ARRL said that the mechanisms for such electronic filing of Form
  618. 610s ''cannot be more than a few months away at worst.''

  620. The League said that the FCC plan would invite abuse because, among
  621. other reasons, ''The Commission itself suffers an inability to stem

  623. limited enforcement resources.''

  626. plan be modified to avoid abuse by having volunteer examiners assign
  627. temporary call signs from blocks allocated to them by the FCC, the
  628. League said this would be an unbearable burden and responsibility on

  631. The League said that, at any rate, the Communications Act gives no
  632. basis for the FCC to delegate call sign assignment authority,
  633. including determining a licensee's basic qualifications, which VEs
  634. would have no way of doing.
